Feral pigeons are a pest or vermin, because of worries that they
spread disease including bird flu, but it has been shown pigeons do not carry
the deadly H5N1 strain. Also concerns of Fort Lauderdale pigeons damaging property, causing pollution with their
poop, dropping, excrement, and driving out other bird species. Although
Fort Lauderdale pest exterminators use poison, hawks or nets have
been used at ground level to control urban bird populations, the effect
is limited. Long term reduction of problem pigeon populations can be achieved by
restricting food supply, which in turn involves legislation and litter (garbage)
control. Pigeons, however, will still pick at garbage bags containing discarded
food or at leftovers carelessly dropped on the ground. Animal contraceptives
Due to the huge population of feral pigeons in Fort Lauderdale, an experimental project used an animal contraceptive called "OvoControl P" in
Miami. OvoControl P stops egg development, and was put in food in feeders. The
action had some support from animal rights groups. |
